Tales of Chinatown

Limehouse, 1913. A fence dies of a wound no one can name. Under a false name, Constable Durham enters an antique dealer's house, connects what he sees, doubts what he is told, and prepares for the night he will open a lacquered coffin. After Sax Rohmer.

About this game

Observe, cross-check and prepare your night-time intrusion.

London, March 1913. Cohen, a fence, lies dead in the Limehouse mortuary, his hand blackened, his diamond still on his finger. Inspector Kerry hands the case to Constable Durham, who enters the house of the antique dealer Huang Chow under the name of Mr. Hampden.

Three stages, one case

  • Monday, on the map of Limehouse: budget your hours and shillings before the six o’clock report.
  • Tuesday, you prepare: the bird-seller, Jamrach's menagerie, the library, a walk with Lala.
  • The night, inside the house: choose your movements around noise and the occupants’ routines.

What you do

  • Connect two clues from the file and complete the sentence they make. A mistake costs time; the answer is always in what you have observed.
  • Compare an inventory with the objects in a room, and a shed skin with a naturalist's plate.
  • Confront a witness who lies with the clue that proves it.
  • Doubt what the press and the inspector say: some clues in the file are only the received ideas of 1913, to be tested on the ground.
  • Choose what you tell Kerry, and what you keep to yourself.

Lala

Huang Chow's daughter is not a mystery to be solved. She sets her own conditions, refuses what is imposed on her, and her trust is won or lost. Three endings shaped by your preparation and your relationship with Lala.

Prejudice (a false deduction)Not a robbery: a tong“Whoever hurt Cohen went for …; he left …. It was not a robbery.”Ring + “A tong”, with the words “a traitor”. Blocks “Not a robbery” until the tong is disputed (the American buyer, Huang’s house, Jamrach’s ledger). Left with Kerry, men from Pennyfields are picked up.
Prejudice (a false deduction)The weapon: a Chinese poison“Cohen died of …, let in by … on his hand.”“A poison of their own” + a mark on the hand, with the words “a Chinese poison” and “a needle”. Blocks “The weapon” until the surgeon strikes it out.
Prejudice (a false deduction)The place: the Pennyfields dens“Cohen was hurt …, near ….”The Pennyfields cutting + the hand, the punctures or the informer, with the words “in a den”. Blocks “The place” until the informer strikes it out. Left with Kerry, his men spend the night in the dens instead of watching the house.
