Slyfari
An iOS browser and an encrypted on-device video library, given equal weight: videos found on the web are kept and replayed on the phone, with no backend. What it is for is still to decide.
- State
- On 16 Oct 2026 Slyfari is a development build, version 0.1.0 after 237 commits since 10 Feb, that has not been submitted to the App Store; what it is for is still to decide. m
- Runs on
- iPhone, iOS 16 or later; a macOS companion, not distributed
- Built with
- Swift (UIKit and SwiftUI), WebKit, AVFoundation, CryptoKit; a build-time Rust tool for content blocking
- Data
- No server, no analytics; videos and the library stay on the device, out of backups
- Code
- Private repository
Known limits
- It is not a private-browsing app: cookies and logins persist between launches by design. m
- The vault protects files at rest, not everything around them: titles and addresses are unencrypted, and the app lock is off by default. m
- No one but its author has used it. m

- decision
Saving is switched off on eleven large video and music platforms whose terms forbid it; a list of blocked sites is chosen over a list of allowed ones. m
- measure
Reading a 400 MB file in 1 MB blocks peaked at 407 MB of memory; releasing each block as it is read brought the peak down to 7 MB. m
- milestone
Vault files now authenticate the order of their blocks and their end, so truncation or reordering is detected. m
- measure
Exporting two passages of a 1,178 MB video gave a 1.4 GB file, because the export re-encoded everything at highest quality; it now copies the original stream. m
- milestone
First numbered milestones, U1 to U14. m
- rename
Vaultware becomes Slyfari the day after the first commit. m
